To remove old paint off old door hinges use dish soap, water, and crock pot. Let soak for several hours and dried paint will come right off. The hardware will have a rustic but clean look to it.

One of Licking County's treasures is the Dawes Aboretum located on St. Rt. 13 close to Newark, Heath, Hebron area. Dawes Aboretum is located 35 miles east of Columbus, Ohio, four miles north of Interstate 70 and six miles south of downtown Newark. The Arboretum is open-free of charge-from 7am until sunset daily except New Year's, Thanksgiving and Christmas days. The Visitors Center is open Monday - Saturday, 8am - 5pm; Sundays and holidays, 10am - 5pm.

While out that way enjoy a cold one and good meal at Crossroads Bar and Grill or Jacktown Pub. Both are located at the corner of St. Rt. 40 and St. Rt. 13 in Jacktown.

Looking to get these Sperry Topsiders broke in so they don't look so new.

Growing up I can remember Dad referring to his shoes and the age of those shoes by what year I was born.

If a good shoe is worth buying it is worth having re-soled in my opinion. There are a couple of tailors in Newark area that will re-sole your dress shoes. I recommend a rubber sole since our snow and rain months take toll on a leather bottom.

I figure my son will look at my worn out shoes someday I can say "well I bought these the year you were born".

A lot of good reasons to stop downtown today. Simply Rising Coffee was searving mac and cheese, Robin Pierce has new NERK, AHIA 43055 t-shirts, and Chop House had Shrimp Po Boy sandwiches listed for $7 on one side of the sidewalk board and $8 on the other. If you are coming from the West you get a discount I guess.

In 1936, G.H. Bass introduced a shoe that would change his company (and American style) forever. Taking cues from a simple slip-on leather shoe from Norway, the now ubiquitous Weejun was born. Combining true hand sewn moccasin construction—requiring one large piece of leather to wrap under and cradle the foot—with a leather dress sole and heel, G.H. Bass & Co. created a shoe that was both durable and extremely versatile. The company's addition of a leather strip across the upper with a unique half moon cutout would come to define the Weejun, along with countless imitators.

Launched as a casual shoe, the loafer quickly found its way into more formal occasions. American men were quick to bring them into the office and classroom. By the 1950s, Weejuns had become a staple for college students around the US as well. A trend so widespread, that it prompted their inclusion in "The Official Preppy Handbook", and solidified their place as a staple of any true prep's wardrobe to this day. In the 1960s, young people began sticking pennies into the shoe's half moon slit, prompting the moniker "penny loafer," a nickname that has stuck around for over half a century.

A man enjoys a pint of bitter in The Harp pub on the day it was named as the Campaign for Real Ale's national pub of the year on February 16, 2011 in London, England. It is the first time that a London pub has been awarded the the prestigious title of CAMRA pub of the year. The Harp, which is owned by real ale pioneer Bridget Walsh, is situated yards from Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden. That time of the year... the LL Bean Duck Boot.

The LL Bean duck boot is a good choice for showing homes during snowy winter months. Lace half way up so you can slip off at someones front door. These have a GORTEX insulated liner so sort of bulky. LL Bean has revamped their "Maine Hunting Shoe" or duck boot...worth checking out.

Family trip to Lowe's...

Patrick, Dan and I spent a half hour at Lowe's yesterday to help Pat plan for his bathroom floor and vanity remodel. Patrick can handle a vast majority of home remodel projects and isn't afraid to dive into something new like adding tile to his bathroom floor. He didn't need our help or advise for that matter but Dan and I were both between appointments (club is closed on Mondays) so we tagged along. This might have been the first time I have been to Lowe's and didn't spend money.

Look forward to the next time we do this.

Editor's Note: Yes - Pat was the only one at Lowe's with a Harris Tweed jacket and scarf - but did have his Red Wing Boots on.
